We are committed to supporting work by trainees and early career scholars. To gain access we ask that you and your student review the guidelines for use and permissions. Please provide details of your project and request the tools (see above).

Fees do apply for certain applications and extensive consultations. We ask that you provide information when you request our tools to help us determine whether a fee will be necessary.

Our tools can be used by researchers examining experiences of respect and mistreatment during perinatal care, models of care, or birth place. The tools have been found to be relevant and accessible to diverse communities around the world. They can also be useful for birthing people to use to help them reflect on the care they received and give feedback to their healthcare providers. Our tools can also be used by healthcare providers and facility representatives to inform quality improvement of perinatal services and to learn more about service-user experiences.

The fees are used to support research, administration and web development at the Birth Place Lab and support our scholars as they continue creating and providing accountability tools and measures of respectful perinatal care.

Formally translated and validated versions of some of our tools are available in the following languages: Arabic, Dutch, Tagalog, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian (Bahasa), Inuktitut,  Farsi, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Thai, Traditional Chinese, Turkish, and Vietnamese. Translations for the following languages are currently in development or awaiting final approval for sharing: Egyptian Arabic, Japanese, and Danish. Many of our tools and measures have been formally translated and are already available in the languages listed above. If the language you seek has not yet been translated, and/or adapted, please contact BPL directly to request permission and to learn more about approved translation and adaptation policies and procedures. Our tools can be used by researchers who are examining experiences of respect and/or mistreatment during perinatal care, including researchers who seek to adapt our tools to be relevant and accessible to diverse communities around the world. Health systems, care providers and facilities can use the Birth Place Lab tools, metrics and measures in quality assessment and improvement initiatives to learn more about service-user experiences of care in their setting. They can also be useful for birthing people to help them reflect on the care they received and provide feedback to their healthcare providers.

For MADM and MOR, we recommend summing the items for those participants who completed all items. See implementation package for guidance around replacing missing values. MIST items can either be summed into a score or recoded into those who experienced any mistreatment or no mistreatment.

Higher scores for MADM indicate greater autonomy. Higher scores for MOR indicate a greater sense of being respected during care interactions. Higher scores on MIST indicate that service user experienced more types of human rights violations. While these tools were developed in a specific country context for research, they have been applied in research and quality improvement projects in multiple geographical locations. How the results are interpreted will depend on options for care and culture perceptions of autonomy, respect and mistreatment. To see where and how the tools have been used, please visit our map.

Information about cutoffs for MADM and MOR can be found in the downloadable packages of each tool which can be requested above. We do not have cut off scores for MIST.

The items are not designed to be used separately.

We recommend reviewing, and maintaining or editing the preamble to the scales to ensure that it aligns with the scope of your study question, and the intended study participants. We can provide guidance on how to adapt the introductory language to optimize participation. Please contact birthplace.lab@ubc.ca for more information.

There are different ways to assess the performance and acceptability of a scale. If you plan to adapt the scale for use with a different population (e.g. health care providers) we recommend you work with members of that population to ensure the items are adapted in a way that resonates with them.
