Get Involved

At the Birth Place Lab, we deeply value representation throughout the research process and within our research team. We are working with a multi-stakeholder team to analyze data on access to respectful perinatal services, especially as experienced by historically marginalized populations. We currently have analysis groups focused on interpreting the findings across 12 different communities and topics. We encourage people who identify as or have special expertise on perinatal care for one or more of these groups to join and participate in the study.

Who can help?

We are seeking researchers, scholars, and Canadian community members with diverse identities and backgrounds. We currently have analysis groups for the following communities:

  • Indigenous, First Nations, M├ętis, and Inuit communities
  • Black, East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, Latinx and/or Middle Eastern communities
  • 2SLGBTQIA+ communities
  • People living with disabilities
  • Recent immigrants and refugees
  • People living in rural and remote communities
  • People who have experienced pregnancy loss
  • People who have experienced incarceration
  • People have experienced substance use
  • People with higher BMI
  • People who have experienced pregnancy or birth-related trauma
  • People with interest in respectful breast/chest feeding care

What does it look like to help?

Analysis group members may:

  • Participate in or lead mixed methods analyses
  • Provide feedback and guidance on research findings
  • Determine where and how findings should be shared, as well as the intended audience for specific findings
  • Contribute to the design of arts-based methods of sharing findings (infographics, videos etc.)
  • Contribute to the writing of scientific papers
  • Review drafts of papers, lay summaries and data display
  • Contribute to policy reports, testimony, and/or tribunals to share findings
  • Attend events where findings will be shared and feedback will be gathered from communities

What is the time commitment?

For each analysis group, team members will attend approximately 4-6 meetings per year in addition to optional independent work between meetings. Time commitments may vary depending on the specific analysis group.
